Ubuntu is an operating system GNU / Linux * based on Debian, the Ubuntu project is supported by the Foundation * Ubuntu and Canonical society *.

The name Ubuntu comes from the Zulu (Africa) and means "humanity to others" or "I am what I am because of what we are all". In other words, without denigrating the importance of the individual, the relationship between people, how to be in relationship is fundamental. It is not about competition but rather complementarity of community and belonging. As individuals, it is now to be responsible and put our talents and abilities to serve the human community and life.

The Ubuntu is an ancient philosophy course, but also a lifestyle, an art of being human, a practice every day applicable to all areas.

The sounds of African instruments at boot and at the close of Ubuntu recall also the African roots of its name. The brown "color of human skin" and the theme name (human) reinforces this idea of community, respect, humanity. The logo representing three (different colors) standing close by the hands also recalls the idea of community and unity between people.

Ubuntu has been launched by billionaire Mark Shuttleworth, South African businessman, a former Debian developer. Ubuntu was born in 2004 (Ubuntu 4.10 Warty Warthog). In 2005 was founded the Ubuntu Foundation.
The avowed aim of Mark Shuttleworth to popularize Linux in creating and improving distribution accessible, easy to use "A distribution that is an extension of your mind, a way to communicate with others."

A stable version of Ubuntu comes out about every six months (usually April and October) following the publication cycle of stable releases of Gnome (March and September). The different versions of Ubuntu are distinguished by a number and code name.
The number corresponds to the year of release of version -2000 and month out, whether for the latest version as I write this article:

7.04 (for 2007 / April)

The code name itself is an adjective and an animal name whose first letters are identical to the final date still to create this article:

Feisty Fawn (the fawn rash)

Users tend to name their distribution by number and / or adjective allotted (Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty).

The next Ubuntu release is scheduled for October 2007, its numbers and code names are:

Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty Gibbon (Gibbon the brave)
